AI Adoption Maturity Map

Every dimension, capability area, goal and practice in one place, placed at the maturity level it is required for. Pick a target level to see what you have to have in place. Wording is condensed from the book; page numbers point back to the source.

How the pieces fit

The model has four nested levels you work through, plus two things that sit beside them. Levels are not a layer in the tree: each capability area is placed at one level (Table 2, p. 85).

The hierarchy
Example artifacts
Listed per capability area as evidence. They are examples only and map many-to-many: one artifact can serve several areas (p. 32).
Maturity indicators
Accountability, Planning and Resourcing (Section 4.13, pp. 81–83). They decide what level a capability area is actually operating at.
Context attributes
A profile of the organizational unit (Table 1, p. 27). Not scored. They decide which practices are “applicable” and what to prioritize.
How a level is reached
  • 1Goals are required. All goals and the applicable practices of a capability area must be done for its dimension to reach that area’s level.
  • 2Levels are cumulative. Table 2 lists the minimum areas for each level. Level 3 needs every Level 1, 2 and 3 area.
  • 3Indicators cap the rating. A capability area is rated at its lowest maturity indicator, even if all goals and practices are met (p. 87).
  • 4Weakest link wins. A dimension is rated at its lowest capability area (p. 87).
  • 5All areas, all indicators. On top of the Table 2 areas, every capability area is expected to meet the indicators of the target level (p. 84).

The map

Rows are the eight dimensions. Each capability area sits in the column of the level its goals complete. Select a capability area to jump to its goals and practices.

Target level

Maturity levels and indicators

What each level means for a single capability area, and what each of the three maturity indicators looks like at that level (Section 4.13, pp. 81–83). A capability area’s level is set by its weakest indicator.
